Bugmate
The "insect crisis" is a growing problem, and especially in the larger cities
around the country, we are currently seeing how insect populations have
plummeted over the past 10 years.
Bugmate is an example of an initiative aimed at helping to address this problem. Bugmate is a concept that makes it possible for people living in cities
to help insects. By planting a selection of specially selected flowers and plants
in their available outdoor areas people help the insects by growing new habitats
for them.
Bugmate was created to engage young people in Denmark in saving insects.
Over the recent decades, the amount and diversity of insects have decreased worldwide. Factors such as climate change, increased amounts of agriculture,
and humans removing more and more "wild" nature are catalysts for many insect
species being endangered and biodiversity decreasing.
Our take on this concept is that young people, especialy in bigger cities, are
familiar with how difficult it can be to find a place to live - the insects finds this
difficult too. They have fewer places to live, and as a young person living in a big
city you can therefore relate to their struggle of finding a place to live.
By growing habitable plants in a balcony box, you can get a “roommate”, or as
we like to call it, a “Bugmate”.
This project was created as a collaboration between me and one other designer.
